[UPDATED] Internet Explorer Users: Take Warning!
[UPDATED] Contributor Max notes in the comments: “Security patch to fix this issue had been released today: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms08-078.mspx ”
Microsoft made an announcement this morning regarding a major security flaw in its Internet Explorer 7 web browser. In their statement, they strongly suggested placing all your IE security settings on “High,” which you can do by opening IE, selecting Tools, clicking Internet Options, and clicking the Security tab. Your other option is to use an alternate web browser if at all possible. When this is the course of action Microsoft is recommending, it’s pretty clear that this is a pretty serious problem with the browser.
Here are the main candidates for your alternate browsing needs.
- Mozilla Firefox
- Opera
- Apple Safari (also available for PC)
- Google Chrome (still in beta testing mode)
At your library, you may also want to check out our previous class on Power Browsing.
- Presentation Slides
- Handout (pdf)
Because Internet Explorer is so widely-used, it’s always important to have a backup browser on hand just in case something like this happens. Be careful out there, and browse safe.
