The award recognizes the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children.

The exhibit will feature more than 160 pieces from 33 popular children’ book illustrators. Many of the artworks are being supplied directly by the artists. Featured artists include David Wiesner, Ed Young, Chris Raschka, Jerry Pinkney, Mo Willems, and David Macaulay.

We hope you’ll take some time to enjoy this exhibit which runs from June 1st through August 16th. You might also want to invite your students to attend a fun-filled afternoon celebrating the art of children’s picture books. On Saturday, June 1st beginning at 1:30 p.m. there will be a “look and find” game with the artwork, a chance to get your picture taken with your favorite picture book and visit from authors/illustrators of Caldecott Medal and honor books. Fifth and sixth grade students particularly will enjoy this tale of an unlikely friendship between a misfit alley cat, Skilley, and a literate mouse, Pip, who occupy a Victorian London tavern. Known for making the best cheese in all of England, the tavern attracts the likes of Charles Dickens, Wilkie Collins and William Makepeace Thackeray. Hired as a mouser, Skilley (who hates the taste of mouse) strikes an agreement with Pip. He will not harm the many mice who make the tavern their home in exchange for a daily serving of cheese, wonderful cheese. Life gets exceedingly more complicated and dangerous for all concerned when Skilley’s nemesis, Pinch, gets hired as a second mouser. Humorous Dickensian references may resonate more with adult readers but this is a terrific, fast-paced adventure with highly relatable characters.

What a hoot to watch young Jacob earnestly say for the third time, “Tom, I have a question for you.” as he handed him his fruit roll-up to open for him. Tom obligingly peeled open the fruit roll-up (By my count he opened 2 fruit roll-ups, 3 yogurt sticks and a bag of chips during lunch.) as he answered Jacob’s question and the questions of the other students.

It was a great opportunity for students to meet, up close and personal, someone who writes and illustrates the very books that they read in the classroom and at home. The kids were able to see where ideas for books come from and how a story evolves. A word of caution. Be careful how you act when sitting next to a stranger on an airplane! Tom’s idea for his book, What Are You So Grumpy About? came from an experience with a grouchy passenger seated next to him during a plane flight.
