Week 6: Upload and Share
July 22, 2011 14 CommentsCongratulations! With the final run-through of your video, you’ve survived the grueling ordeal that is Video Bootcamp. (It wasn’t really grueling, was it? Please say it wasn’t grueling.)
Just as every bird needs to leave the nest, every video needs to make its way into the great big world of the Internet. Now that you’ve created your video, it’s time to release it into the great big world. If you’ve used iMovie to assemble your project, there is a built-in tool for uploading directly to YouTube.
Your tasks for the week: (approximate time: < 1 hour)
1. Upload your finished video to YouTube.
2. Send us your feedback on this project, using the attached form. (Be honest – we welcome constructive criticism!)
Using iMovie to upload to YouTube
1. The Upload to YouTube wizard is located under the Share menu on the Toolbar. The menu that pops up will look like the screenshot you see above.
2. You’ll be uploading to “skokielibrary” - the Library’s official YouTube account. You can get the password from Erika, Mick, or Toby once they’ve signed off on your finished video. The category for the clip should remain Nonprofits and Activism.
3. Give your video a title. If your finished clip falls under one of our main categories (Library Tour, Quick Takes, etc.), you’ll want your video title to start with that category. If you did a book review, for example, your title will read “Quick Takes: The Hunger Games.”)
4. Add a brief description and at least 5 tags for the video. You can get as specific as you like here – these will help the video show up in search results. (If you’re doing a book review, also include the ISBN for the book.)
5. Select HD 720p as the image quality for the clip, and uncheck “Make this movie personal.” Click Upload and send the video on its way.
6. Visit the library’s YouTube page after about half an hour and take a look at your finished product. Did everything turn out OK? If everything passes muster, post a link to the video in the comments field of this blog post.
7. If not, let one of the project planners know and we’ll see what we can do to fix it.
8. Fill out the evaluation form, and let us know what you thought of the project.
Congratulations! You made it!
Be sure to check out the other staff creations (see the links in the comments below) and congratulate your fellow bootcampers on their great work.
We hope you enjoyed this training program! What do you think you’ll do for your next video?
Assignments

Thanks to Holly and Ruth I now have the proper SPL introduction and ending and my little film is uploaded and shared. The whole process, from the beginning of bootcamp to the end, was not “grueling,” just challenging AND I learned a great deal.

Many thanks to Bootcamp sergeants and fellow recruits!
What a fun process. It’s like learning a new language. I’m seeing tv differently; noticing techniques.
Hi everyone. You can check out my video at

[...] Week 6 is where the finished piece goes live. Participants are encouraged to comment on one another’s work, and reflect on their own experience. We’ve finished one cohort of this program, and are now in Week 3 for the second group. So far results have been quite positive. We’re helping to seed our YouTube channel, and we’ve got several ‘Campers thinking about their next pieces. Our patrons have diverse tastes. In order to reach them, we’re going to need to create a diverse body of content. That’s going to require all staff to get involved. [...]
Ta da! Since this is a video for people with special needs, I took some extra time to figure out how to add closed captions.

I’m happy with everything except for the amount of times I use the word “some” and how I can’t get the captions to sync with the squeaking dog. (I think it’s the extra noise I make moving the bin that throws off YouTube’s algorithm)
This is great (and is a fine reminder for staff as well about all YS offers). Plus you talked, signed and filmed at the same time–talk about multi-tasking!
I am done! I thought it was a little intimidating. I don’t feel I am ready to help any one else. Thank you for the experience – especially Dave and Ruth!
If Clifford had that much fun, everyone is going to want to go to Backlot Bash next year!
It’s done!! You can view it at: http://youtu.be/Zgym0_4ARi0
A big thank you goes to Ruth, Erika, Mick, & Toby. You all assisted me with my video project at some point. I couldn’t have done it without you…and Lynda.com!
As a video newb, I’m pretty happy with my project. Sitting down in front of iMovie for the first time was a bit unnerving, but the Lynda.com videos helped make me feel more comfortable with the edit process. It may have helped to have an iMovie demo session available prior to the week 4 component.
Woo-hoo! Awesome job in editing so much material down to a streamlined length. Dig your dissolve effects, too.
Great job, Dave! You’re a trooper!!

There are definitely some things that I would change/plan to do differently next time, but for now I’m fine with “good enough.”
Thanks to the boot camp counselors for all of their help!
Fantastic job, Annabelle!
Love it! You are such a natural in front of the camera. And you have a great voice!!
