The Best of the Books … and Beyond!

Angry Young Men

Author Alan Sillitoe recently died. You may recognize his name as the author of  The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner; often required  high school reading.. In many of the obituaries,  he is described as a member of Britain’s Angry Young Men generation. During the 50s and 60s many novels, plays and later movies were part of this movement, which was known for the realistic portrayal of the workingclass in an honest and unsentimental way. Notable authors from this era include:  John Osborne, Henry Green, John Braine, Kingsley Amis,  Harold Pinter and many others.
